Jesse Kove of AS NIGHT COMES in ‘Chariots of Fire’ Sequel

Jesse-Kove-Variety-Joseph-Fiennes-The-Last-Race-cast

LONDON — Joseph Fiennes, who was BAFTA nominated for “Shakespeare in Love,” has taken the role of Scottish runner and devout Christian Eric Liddell in “The Last Race,” which plays like an unofficial sequel to “Chariots of Fire.”

Liddell’s feats as an athlete, and his rivalry with Harold Abrahams, were immortalized in “Chariots of Fire,” which won four Oscars, including best picture. “The Last Race” portrays Liddell’s life after the events depicted in “Chariots of Fire,” when he worked as a teacher and missionary in China, theIndependent newspaper reported. He was interned by the Japanese in 1943, and died in the prison camp of a brain tumor.

Jesse Kove co-stars with Joseph Fiennes in “The Last Race”

The Scottish runner Eric Liddell was immortalised in the classic film Chariots of Fire, and now 34 years after the Oscar-winning movie, an unofficial sequel of sorts is on the starting line.

The original film, released in 1981, starred Ian Charleson as Liddell and won four Academy Awards. It was resolutely British in both classification and style.

The Last Race, meanwhile, stars a resolutely British actor – Joseph Fiennes – but is being filmed largely in China by a director from Hong Kong –Stephen Shin, who also wrote the script. The film, which is co-directed by Canadian Michael Parker, will depict Liddell’s work as a missionary in China after his victorious turn at the 1924 Paris Olympics.

First Look Review – AS NIGHT COMES

Writer/Director Richard Zelniker’s As Night Comes crackles with adolescent urgency and the simmering frustrations of teenage alienation. Having recently moved across the country to L.A., Sean (Myko Olivier) is an outsider, a small fish unable to negotiate the strong and deadly currents of his inner city high school, until the tide washes him toward the shark-like Ricky (Luke Baines). Being the king of the high school’s emo tribe, Ricky has a social cache that Sean can only dream of, and he soon falls under Ricky’s charismatic spell. Our Ricky has a chip on his shoulder, though. A bitterness not only towards the unspeakable jocks who pick on his black clad bunch of buds, but the adult world too, who ‘never think about new generations’, and for whom Ricky demands ‘extreme action to end their corruption’. What are you rebelling against, Ricky? What ya got?!

Jesse Kove & Richard Zelniker Interview by Tyrone Tann

“AS NIGHT COMES is a very well-done, written, directed, produced, & executed Indie-Film! Has solid character-driven writing…, solid acting, especially by the actor LUC BAINES,who plays “Ricky Gladstone…,” that gives a great performance of a character that will give you creeps & chills, due to the sick-twisted mindset he displays and showcases in the film. All the actors in the film come across very natural & likeable in their acting…, and the movie is just very realistic, raw, and extremely intense…, and keeps you captivated to see what’s going to happen next! Overall, it is a…Hip, Twisted but Slick, Cool Film! It sets another bar for teen-angst films!”

Hollywood, CA – Illuminate Pictures has secured a VOD deal with distribution powerhouse Gravitas Ventures for its high school thriller As Night Comes, formerly titled Mischief Night.

The film will be available in an estimated 100 million homes throughout the United States and Canada on December 5, 2014, via Gravitas Ventures.

“Gravitas Ventures is a dominant force in the world of cutting-edge VOD distribution,” said Illuminate Pictures partner Richard Zelniker who directed, produced and co-wrote the high school film. “We’re excited to be involved in the tipping point of film distribution, where a film made for disaffected teens will be available directly to them, via their preferred channel of consumption.”
